Robert Thorn's own son dies moments after being born. Thorn is persuaded by the hospital chaplain, Father Spiletto, to secretly adopt an orphan whose mother died at the same time. Thorn agrees, but doesn't tell his wife Katherine. This happens in Rome, but shortly afterwards Thorn is appointed US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Mysterious events begin to plague the Thorns ...
